Why Ski in Morzine?

Why should you choose Morzine for your ski holiday? There are many factors that make it the perfect winter destination, however I would like to firstly dispel the myth that all resorts around the 1000m level do not have good snow records. Records prove that The Portes du Soleil and especially Avoriaz, which Morzine is closely linked to, has a great snowfall record. Apparently this is to do with the shape of our valley and our proximity to Lake Geneva. All I know is that I have lived here now for over 15 years and have skied from the 10th December to the end of April every winter season.

In these times there has been plenty of occasions when other much higher resorts have been busing clients around to our Morzine slopes to ski, so much so that we even at times had to limit the sale of lift passes to clients staying in resort. We also have a huge snow cannon coverage and a dedicated team creating snow when it is required to keep the important links open to provide plenty of skiing for everyone.

The Alps has occasionally been considered to be “struggling for snow”, however there has always been enough to enjoy a great ski holiday. There is always the option to make your way from Morzine to Avoriaz for more snow, and there has always been a large number of slopes open with many pistes remaining in fantastic condition. Indeed, some of our guests for Christmas 2016 said that it was the best ski holiday they had ever been on. The sun was shining, the slopes were groomed perfectly and were quiet. All the workers in the restaurants and bars seemed relaxed and were very attentive. Morzine also makes a massive effort every year to make it feel very festive with lots of decorations and animations for all the family to enjoy.

What’s also great about skiing in Morzine is its sheer vastness, with over 650km of ski area. The fact we our ski slopes are between 1000m – 2900m also means that we have lots of diverse natural terrain. To see for yourself, download a ski map: here.

Morzine has a high altitude which is more open, barren and rocky, as well as plenty of tree-lined skiing. So one minute you can be in open powder fields, the next you can be darting in and out of the trees with lots of natural obstacles to test you. The tree line also protects you when the cloud comes in, so whatever the weather conditions here, there is always somewhere open to ski which is not always the case in the higher resorts such as Val d’isere or Tignes.

I cannot finish without mentioning all the parks that we have dotted around Portes Du Soleil, with a special mention to the Burton Stash in Avoriaz. This is great commitment from one of the biggest brands in snowboarding and winter sports. The area has proved incredibly popular with all levels of skier/rider with even the snow schools passing through, as the obstacles can make learning useful techniques a lot of fun.
