The morning was clear and fresh. We set off down a beautiful open descent. After about an hour we reached another refuge (de la Nova) where we decided to stop for some more breakfast and another cup of tea.
We had quite a climb in front of us. About 1100 vertical meters to Col de la Seigne. It was a good climb, all ridable, then a nice descent to an amazing refuge for lunch. Great food and we were sat right next to an amazing glacier. After lunch it was straight down a nice fast flowing section which provided us with our first and, as it happens, our only puncture or the entire trip. Phil quickly dealt with it and we carried along the valley floor until we reached the base of our next climb. This climb turned out to be brutal. We thought it was only going to be a couple of hundred meters but it went on for ever. The scenery was amazing but it was steep so we had to push and carry quite a lot of it. We were rewarded though. The descent into Courmayeur was something special.
We had plenty of route decisions to make during this trip but one as we got nearer to Courmayeur was probably the biggest/most important, so it was nice when we all came to the same conclusion, which made us realised that we had come away with the right people. Just because you are normally best of friends does not necessarily mean they are the right people to go on a trip like this with. After a short road climb from Courmayeaur to Entreves we finally mde it to our hotel (Astoria). Bikes stored away, a couple of beers, a pasta dinner and time to reflect on another mammoth day.
