Are you an experienced bike rider in the UK but going to the alps for the first time? Or want to change your bike riding experience in the Alps? We at Aiglon Morzine self catering apartments asked Mark from Alpine Sports bike hire some typical questions you might want answered. Here’s what he had to say:
"I heard that Morzine is all about downhill MTB. Is this true?"
Mark - "Absolutely not! Whilst Morzine has a well-earned reputation for some amazing downhill courses, all kinds of cycling are available in Morzine, and there are actually some fantastic road rides as well as cross-country rides too. We have a great selection of bikes available for hire, from road bikes to hard tails, cross country, freeride and full downhill mountain bikes. If we have availability it is possible to change mid stay if you fancy trying a different discipline."
"What should I budget for bike hire?"
Mark - "We have a range of bikes to suit most budgets, and prices depend on the specification of the bike. For example, kids bikes are €20 per day and the GT Fury World Cup downhill bike is €105."
"Do I have to hire a bike for a whole week?"
Mark - "It is possible to hire a bike daily or weekly depending on availability. Obviously, hiring a bike for a longer period works out more cost effective."
"What size bike will I need?"
Mark - "If you ride a bike at home you will have a good idea what size bike you require. However different brands can size differently so it is always worth contacting us in advanced with your height, weight, and ability so that we can advise on the correct size for you and our availability."
"Can I hire a bike when I get to Morzine?"
Mark - "It is possible to hire when you arrive. However, to avoid disappointment, it is best to hire in advanced. The Aiglon staff can help with these arrangements."
"What other equipment will I need?"
Mark - "You will need to bring riding clothing for all weathers. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. It is also worth bringing a rucksack to carry spare clothing, equipment (ie puncture repair kit) , water and snacks etc. Helmets must be worn and we recommend body protection as well. This can be hired in the shop. For the more experienced riders, if you use particular shoes and pedals we recommend that you bring them with you and we will fit them to your bike. We also have bike computers for hire at €4 per day."
"How will I know where to go once I have my hire bike?"
Mark - "Our staff and the staff at the Aiglon are all bikers and therefore will be able to point you in the right direction. There are maps available for all disciplines. The mountain bike trails are all fairly well marked and graded so you should not find yourself on something outside your capabilities."
"I'm thinking of bringing my own mountain bike. Is this advisable?"
Mark - "There are advantages to bringing your own bike but, apart from the transport costs to get the bike to Morzine, you should also budget for spares and upgrades. The Alps can be a lot more punishing on equipment and, unless you have a good spec of MTB, it is probably better to hire a bike more suited to the conditions. The added advantage is that it is maintained for you too!"
