After desperately trying not to eat, drink and shop too much, we return to Morzine around mid-May to discover people are still randonnee skiing as there is still snow in Avoriaz. However, for me it's bike season.
There's plenty of maintenance and odd jobs that need doing but, in between the work, I've managed a couple of ride outs already. But after speaking with a couple of friends, it was decided that a good climb was in order to get the fitness levels up. We decided on a local trail called Morzinette. I had only done this trail in the season when you traverse across from Avoriaz, so wasn't too sure about the length of the climb, but was happy to tag along.
The climb so far, albeit mostly on fire road, was already pretty tough due to the steepness and looseness of the track. Stupidly I thought that we had broken the back of the day's climbing but was soon put straight. We still had more than half of the climb to go and the next sections were steeper and more technical.
After about an hour and half climbing, with some sections having to be done on foot due to fitness levels and lack of technical ability, we had climbed around 800 vertical meters and reached the Morzinette plateau.
Finally you pop out onto the road not far from the centre of Morzine. Time for a well deserved beer!
15km, 800 vertical meters, couple of hours.
